Teeth dug into flesh, and Vesper growled in satisfaction as blood gushed from the wound against her gums. She pressed as hard as she could, though she had not had the fortune to inherit her wolf father’s stronger jaw muscles, and so there would be no lasting damage. She hoped it hurt, though, prayed it hurt, wanted the bitch to be crying out like poor sweet Kiara had. She was reminded of her own knife wounds and the slashing pain and her own defenselessness against the blade; she could only imagine how the arctic wolf, inexperienced in battle as she seemed to be, would have fared against her attacker.

When fangs lunged for her in turn, the coywolf only flattened her ears as close to her head as she could and relinquished her grip immediately. As the other’s neck was outstretched in an attempt to bite her, teeth scraping her cheek, Vesper aimed for her exposed throat. She would take it in her jaws like she had the boy she’d killed, would shake and press until the wind pipe crunched. She wanted to hear that last hissing rattle of breath.

But while the primeval monster overtaking her mind was dead set on dealing damage to the dog luperci, the logic that rolled underneath was concerned for Kiara. Out of the corner of her eye, she hoped to catch a glimpse of the other. She knew that, unless she killed this woman quickly, she would have to move quickly in order to get both of them out of there.
