As the cut on her cheek bled, Vesper missed her mark. The other had turned, the vulnerable folds of flesh around her throat shifting out of the way, leaving her with a soft ear tip to bite. She did not stop to tear it, however, quickly parting her jaws again to deflect whatever blows the luperci would offer. A face was a dangerous part of the body to attack, or at least that was how it had been when Ves fought against other single-formed beings in the wilderness.
But those non-luperci had not had the use of manmade weapons, strange and cruel and glittering metal blades that cut more cleanly than fangs. When the woman stepped back and drew a short sword, the coywolf stepped back uncertainly. Her unease was only heightened by the warning scream of her friend; she turned her head but felt the weapon fall against her skull. It was a glancing blow, not nearly enough to knock her out, but that did not mean it wasn’t quite painful.
Teeth exposed in a grimace, she stepped backwards again, fleet-footed and bristling. She did not want to risk turning her back on the other in case her knife became a projectile. Keeping crouched to protect her underside, ears low and muzzle wrinkled against her scars, she continued to retreat step by step backwards, putting precious space between her and the dog. One needed space in a fight, especially if one was small; agility and strategy were the friend of one who didn’t have the brute strength to back up close combat.
“Keep moving!” Vesper shouted to Kiara, managing to remain level-headed long enough to decide to run herself. With one last look at the torturer, she whirled around and practically flew at the arctic wolf, hoping that the other did not advance, stooping to grab the girl’s scruff in her jaws and haul her along if she really needed to. They needed to get out of here.
