Everyone had fears, whether it was fear of a certain object, species, or even abstract concept; the scarred coywolf was no exception to this. For one, knives terrified her. But the terror that had been encroaching on her as of late, a terror twisted into obsession, was betrayal. The few canines she used to care about had betrayed her: cowed Sparrow following their father, Juniper staring with wide dark blue eyes and refusing to come with her, even Blind disappearing from the lands of Nova Scotia as if she had never been there. She was afraid of others’ betrayal, but even more than that, she was afraid of betraying others herself.

The traitor Sage had gone to Ichika no Ho-en, a pack where Vesper had connections. Salsola had been attacked by a strange alliance that Vesper was secretly a part of. There were coyotes and wolves that relied on her for her duties and protection. It was overwhelming, and it had become threaded with every fiber of her being. She was a woman before her execution, her legs lashed by ropes to horses who would go galloping off in opposite directions.

That fear bubbled forth into resentment for what this spy before her stood for, and mostly she acted out of deep-rooted worry rather than simple cruelty and disgust. The dark-splashed brown dorsal stripe of fur bristled for intimidation as she skulked a few more steps forward, her thin legs stiff and her posture challenging. She was a coiled rattlesnake.

But the albino only grinned casually, explaining that he just wanted to “pay a visit.” The familiar excuse caused a bark of laughter to leave the Praetorian, the harsh start of a cackle choked short before she lashed her tail once more. Matteo had the gall to believe he could traipse over these borders whenever he wanted. He might have had coyote blood, but that meant absolutely nothing to the hybrid unless he was truly part of the clan.

“Unless you have something useful to say, today is a bad day to come,” Vesper hissed, some of her eloquence returning as she stood stiff-hackled before him, stance spread and strong as if expecting him to try to dart past her. “You, spy, are not permitted visits.” She coated the word with her rattler’s venom and coiled more, grinning as only a coyote could grin. “The Aquila addressed this point. Anyone who’s let you wander over for teatime is disobeying his orders. You’re to meet here, pass on your information, and turn to go.” Her tongue flicked over her lips. “You may cry for Ezekiel if you wish, but I am the master of intelligence here—and anything you say to him you can say to me.” Once again she shifted, and the urge to run and jump at him and bleed him was becoming stronger by the moment. Oh, she was becoming a beast, but this was just the therapy she needed.
