Stand Strong, Stand Together

1,049. Don't bother reading this, it's just ramble for sosu, and legit all she does is smile at Cypress, look at Oak, and later lean closer to Cyp lol.

It surprised her, almost, when the larger wolf sat beside her, but it was not a surprise born of unhappiness. She smiled warmly, returning the gesture with a nudge of her own, glad that he was there now. The silver-painted girl was hardly the most social creature, but she held her friendship with the Praetor’s son dear. There was an underlying fear that something would happen to him, deep within the back of her mind, but Artemis would not vocalize this. It was simply residue from the horror of Denali’s violent death, the thought that her best friend had been taken from her when they were only so young and that it, of course, had the potential to happen again. She did not like to think of that, for the idea of losing Cypress in a violent accident was very frightening indeed, and so she hoped that he would not be venturing too close to Inferni again. The coyote clan to the north did not have a friendly reputation, exactly, and for her sake and his mother’s, she hoped that he would stay in the pack of Dreamers and not wander far again. The Marino looked to Oak, too, thinking the same thoughts and hoping for the same thing. Anu did not need either of them leaving the pack or wandering too far, and neither did she.

Soft, baby blue eyes studied the members of the pack as her mother spoke in response to the dark-furred male that had proclaimed his loyalty so flamboyantly. Artemis had seen the way her mother stiffened, if only for a brief moment, and so had she when Kota had begun his small speech. Perhaps that was a reaction that they’d all had, for she noticed that Silvano had been watching him strangely. Her brother’s attention was turned to the strange, asocial male, and so did her mother’s attention. In fact, everyone seemed to be looking between Kota, Savina, and Mars, waiting for what was going to happen next. Kota had brought the attention upon himself by speaking so openly, but perhaps that was not a bad thing, unless he decided to go back on his words, of course. The Consul would naturally be the center of attention here at a meeting she had called, and so Artemis knew that her mother was not uneasy with all the eyes on her. It was the Russo man and his daughter that received many glances that may not have been expected. His reaction to the ebony male’s speech did not go unnoticed by the Dreamers gathered there.

Artemis inhaled sharply when her mother addressed Mars, waiting for the storm that was surely going to pass over them now. Her mother had never been the type to take problems lying down, and Mars had been a somewhat problematic member, from what the silver Marino knew. Artemis looked quickly to the man as her mother spoke, watching for his reaction, because surely such a male would not take the forward words well. The young woman wondered where the rest of his family was now, or if they had simply stopped caring about the pack and had stayed at their home in the village. It was a strange thought that the male would come to the meeting if his woman did not, but perhaps he did it simply because he was hoping to come out of the bottom of the hierarchy. Still, she could not imagine why his woman would not come with him, if only to help him in his appearances to the pack. Artemis did not know anything about the way Mars and Krystalle acted when they were not in a group setting, and truthfully, she was not sure if she even wanted to. He acted as if he had something better to do than listen to her mother’s speech.

Waiting for the man’s response and what was surely going to happen afterwards made her anxious, for she knew the tone her mother had used. Savina had never even used that tone when Artemis had caused trouble or run off as a pup, and she had not been mad at her for the accident last winter, although she had forbidden Artemis from climbing on the roof again. It had not needed saying, of course, for the girl could hardly handle walking to the second floor of the manor and surely would lose her mind before she climbed atop the building again. No, Artemis had never heard that anger before directed at her. It was the tone reserved for punishment, but it was not the hate-filled anger that her mother had used with Denali’s murderer and Parker’s attacker, and it was not the voice her mother had used when the war had fallen upon them so heavily. It was a different tone; it was an anger laced with impatience. Truly, it was not even anger that Artemis heard in her mother’s words. It was the voice of a woman who had been worn down.

Mars, too, looked angry with the hardened gaze he had locked on his features. Without knowing him, she could hardly know what he was thinking or what he might do, and that worried her some. She had no way of predicting what he might do or say in response to the tired words that the Consul accused him of. Artemis waited as if on eggshells, hoping there would not be a fight or any sort of real confrontation. Hesitantly, she leaned closer to Cypress, hoping that he was not as worried as she was about a stand off between Savina and Mars. If there was going to be a fight or argument, she would not have the option of leaving unless ordered by her mother, but she felt better being so close to her earthen-hued friend. The small silver wolf wished she knew what he was thinking, though, and whether he expected Mars to answer or not. She did not know. If her mother had said those words to her, she would have answered immediately because of their blood ties and the fact that Savina was her mother, but if she were any other wolf, Artemis probably would not bother answering. But then, she would not behave like the Russo man.
