Moving slowly through the ruins of the dead city, Drakien felt shudders running up and down his spine. It was one thing to pass through places like this with more of his own kind, knowing that anything that sneaked up on him would only be a friend or a family member. Now, alone with only himself for company, he couldn't help but realize how...haunted this place was. He understood, now, how his second--third?--his other family couldn't bear to come near this place. Except, perhaps, for Cai, who seemed to care for little aside from the shiny things to be found around his home.

Shaking himself out of those thoughts, Drakien slid off Breixo's back and poked through the wreckage. Half the buildings seemed to be deteriorating, and the other half seemed to have never been safe enough to enter in the first place. Frowning thoughtfully, he moved forward and lifting a metal pipe off the street, using it to rummage without actually touching anything. He'd see if there was anything salvageable in this city, he supposed; and if not, he'd move on.

A smile came across his face as he remembered doing this in Europe, in the middle of the night, with others in his troop--and here he was, in broad daylight, doing the same thing. It had seemed like such an adventure then, when they did everything in secrecy, and now...well, now it had had all the fun sucked out of it. He supposed sunlight would do that to your adventures; he'd have to remember to come back, if he found any oil lamps, to do this again after the sun went down.
