Levent stood stiffly over his friend, staring across at the wolf that looked even more startled than he was. It might have been smarter to grab the cat and run, but confusion leaked from his mind throughout his body, rooting him to the spot. As the stranger’s ears twitched, Wilson shifted underneath the short blue-eyed wolf, and that combined with a muttered foreign plea was the only warning that the pair received before the wolf killed itself.

Immediately, the Turkish man recoiled, shifting shape as he did so. His bones crackled and lengthened, and the paws that had been planted firmly on either side of Wilson now held the tomcat close to his chest. As he embraced his friend defensively, he turned sharply away from the sight of blood and entrails welling slowly from the gashed stomach of their assailant.

Neden? Levent asked himself under his breath, but then his pale eyes fell upon a familiar face and widened.

The white cat nestled tight against the man, his face buried in the creamy fur of his chest, recognized the new tension in the merchant’s body and finally twisted to follow his gaze. His fur bristled immediately, his ears flattening tight against his head, but he was too frightened to even let out a hiss.

“Amy,” Levent said breathlessly. He stood, dark hair disheveled, the cloth that usually tamed it hanging from his wrist, and clutched Wilson wordlessly when the feline began to squirm as if to leap and take action there and then. He could not quite say that he was happy to see her, as there was hardly any room for emotions besides shock at this point, but any relief upon seeing the successful woman melted away when she grinned and greeted him—as if they hadn’t both just seen a wolf choose death for no apparent reason, or no reason apparent to him.

Siktir, the brown wolf spat out when she spoke casually to him. No—he was not going to ignore the carcass that had fallen into the water. “What is this all about?” He threw an arm back to point at the blood. It was a demand, and perhaps the corpse would have been even more shocked to see the man demand something from Amy, but Levent was a man who did not bow genuinely to anyone. He had been able to treat the woman as an equal back in Europe, and so he called for answers then.
