We Meet Again

The village regained some life by the time the Turkish man returned, and his blue eyes followed the movements of some of the tribe as they went about various tasks. Wilson seemed to find none of said tasks dangerous, as he was silent and even dropped down from his canine companion’s shoulder to the ground. He faked composure by licking a paw and combing his whiskers, thought they trembled. He was just as uncomfortable around the woman as the screaming shaman.

Amy shook her head then said that the shaman saw her as a demon—and the cat looked up immediately from his grooming, for Levent’s expression grew intense at the woman’s dismissive explanation. He nodded slowly as she concluded, but the smile that came to his lips wasn’t a casual and flamboyant one as before. Instead, he stepped closer, a shoulder pressed to the pole she was leaning on, the space between them diminishing. He seemed to be searching for something—a reaction of some sort, whether from her or from him. If the shaman could sense a demon’s aura, why couldn’t he? He’d tasted of the drugs that brought such sensations to mind.

He chuckled, though an outsider might call it sinister. “Are you a demon?” he purred, smiling though his eyes searched hers intently. “And are you truly bad?” His lips pulled back in a toothy grin, his voice falling. “Should I be afraid of you?” Many other questions passed silently across his face, challenging the truth in her connection to the other world. He’d seen many who would name themselves demons and devils and gods, all blasphemers whose only claim to the darkness was that of an insecure child. There was a deep truth in such things, and he acted as if he could tell if she would lie.

The white tomcat flattened his ears, curling his tail tightly around his haunches to keep it from lashing irritably. “You’re playing with fire, Lev,” he muttered, but it might as well have been to himself.
