between what's fair and what you really need

Trent wouldn't have expected Alder to be at the bottom of the pile, since he was pretty big and all. Really? he said with a flimsy smile, wondering how it was that such a large, broad creature would end up at the bottom of the pile. Trent didn't literally ask, though, since it seemed like a rude thing to ask about.

Trent figured that exploring human houses could be fun. He'd gone to Halifax city once -- but without finding the wolf he'd gone there to look for -- and he knew that the Court territory had plenty of houses, too. He wasn't much of an explorer, always afraid to run into things he couldn't handle, like bears, so exploring caves didn't appeal to him very much. At least not alone, and he didn't really have anyone to ask along, either.

The houses are, uh... It's new. Trent was used to living in dens dug from the earth or small caves or hollow logs, but not the houses left behind by the humans. It was a new and foreign pack structure to him. Everything is pretty new here. The way that dominance was exerted, the way they ate, hunted, and lived... It was all so strange and new. It truly was as if being born all anew again for Trent, who had to adjust to all of these new things as opposed to his traditional birth pack.
