She came under the overhang with him just moments after he shook himself off, but his efforts were in vain for all she did was shake herself off, spraying some of the water that dampened her own coat onto him. It wasn’t intentional; she just couldn’t resist the instinct. She faced him while he spoke, then bent one ear back, displeased, as he turned away from her.
“No, you don’t understand,” she said, stepping forward. “Noah deserved to be punished, but his punishment should have been a private matter; business for New Dawnners only. Why did we agree to make a spectacle out of him in front of Ichika? He is still part of our pack, and even disgraced we hold greater love for him than for them.”
She sighed, her gaze dropping to stare blankly at her muddy paws. A moment later she was beside Zalen, even if it meant one flank was in the rain again. She nuzzled into his shoulder, his Optime form large and bulky next to the sleek Lupus. “I still stand for our decision and I will never speak out publicly against what we did. What we did,” she stressed it, reminding him that she had consented to it just as Zalen had. It was unfair that he had to do the dirty work, to dole out the punishment on his own.
“What proof did they have that he trespassed? Even so, how could we know that it wasn’t a forgery, a set up? I don’t think Ichika would do that, I know they wouldn’t, but in your words ‘what if it was Inferni’? I know, I know. We would never trust Inferni like that, but I don’t think Noah would have ever made that mistake with them, either. We took their word on his crime, and we chose his penalty. We should never have let them be there,” she shook her head, suddenly hating the Ichikans for being present; luckily the feeling passed quickly. “If we took their word, they should have taken ours. Is our word not as good to them as theirs is to us?”
She turned her gaze, meeting Zalen’s eyes. “I don’t care what the crime, I never want to see our people shamed in front of outsiders’ eyes ever again.” Her voice was firm, and her eyes bore into him, but the passion within them was now filled with compassion, not rage. She wanted him to see eye to eye on this, she wanted an official mandate regarding punishing their pack.
