Cerberus closed his fingers around the flute once it was placed in his hands, and then he turned it over and over and over, studying the structure and the marks on the sides. It was a treasure to him, simply because he hadn’t seen anything like it in a very long time. Back home, his family possessed many interesting trinkets and tools, but Ceri hadn’t bothered to gather any of them when he left. The only reminder of home that he wanted with him was the rope around his neck, and that was more of a reminder of his dear Geoff than of the rest of his family. Lifting the instrument to hold before his mismatched eyes, Cerberus marveled at its intricacies until he finally handed it back to the wolf. It’s lovely, he said, and built very well. It looks like something that a performer might use.

The coywolf offered his companion an encouraging smile then, and leaned over on his knees to watch the wolf. Would you play another for me? he asked, not really caring what he played as long as he had the chance to listen to the sweet notes the flute emitted again. That is, if you don’t mind, he quickly added. With an enthusiastic flick of his tail, Cerberus’ ears pricked forward to listen more attentively and his eyes lit up with excitement. He acted like a little kid when he had the chance to listen to music, for it had always been one of his favorite things. Unfortunately, he hadn’t been blessed with a voice decent enough to create songs of his own, but he always dreamed of playing some kind of instrument. Now he was sitting in front of the first canine who could help make that dream a reality, and the anticipation was nearly agonizing.
