Silence surrounded the hybrid until he stirred with a snort and caught the scent of a new arrival: there was a horse nearby. Ceri’s father had owned a horse when he and his brother were merely pups, and he’d always bugged Teilo to let him ride it. But the timber wolf was painfully protective of Cerberus, and thus perfected a painless rejection to deliver after each request. Many a night had been spent waiting for his parents to fall asleep before sneaking off to the stables, only to eventually fall asleep as well beside his father’s horse and wake in his bed once again. He envied those who rode horses, and needless to say he wished for one of his own. But, unfortunately, he was too lazy to catch one. Turning his head, Cerberus spotted the horse and its rider just as the canine called out something he didn’t quite understand. Once the coyote neared him, Cerberus stretched his snout forward with a quick sniff and then looked the man up and down. ”Bless you?” he said, unsure of exactly how to respond. He wasn’t keen on many languages, and those he did know only provided him with a few foreign words used to impress the ladies. Suddenly Cerberus felt panic creep into his throat as he wondered if he’d have to play charades with a canine who barely spoke English.
But, what was that? Had he actually spoken to his horse? Cerberus HAD caught the muttered word in a tongue he obviously knew well, and this permitted his typical coy smile to spread across his pale lips. Rising to his feet, Cerberus dusted himself off before extending a hand to the male. He sported the most exotic-looking pelt, one that obtained colors he’d scarcely seen before. His own fur literally paled in comparison to the coyote, and Ceri almost felt as if he needed to cover himself up. Quickly surpassing his embarrassment – or perhaps envy – Cerberus flicked his tail curiously behind him, stealing a glance at the horse once more before offering, ”The name’s Cerberus. I haven’t trespassed on your land have I?”
