Perhaps a young luperci more removed from their instincts would have been horrified and guilty at the crush of small bones and organs on their tongue. The dog hybrid was tuned to his wolf ancestry, however, and he did not spare the mouse’s person a second thought other than relishing the victory in the cracking sound and the earthy flavors that danced on his tongue. It was only a minor rite of passage—one that would be shadowed by his first shift and his first successful hunt of large prey—but he was giddy with it.

He chuckled around his prize as she praised him and made a joke about the clock-climbing mouse in the rhyme. For a moment, he wondered if he might share with the merle female, but that thought quickly passed into fantasy as he hunkered down on the forest floor. He deposited his little kill and made quick work pecking at the choice pieces of meat on the tiny body. It was hard to resist the temptation of swallowing the entire thing whole, but he hadn’t swallowed even tiny bones before, and he was anxious about getting something stuck in his throat.

“Now eggs?” Skoll asked, his head jerking up as he looked at her. He hadn’t realized how hungry he was until she’d brought it up, and the small morsel that was the mouse did not fill a growing boy’s stomach.

Rikki-tikki knew that he must catch her, or all the trouble would begin again.
