The sudden thunder of hooves and an electrical energy in the air caused Wayne to lift his head and nearly sit up to see what was coming. He didn’t need to see, however, as he’d called for one canine alone. A smile crept over his lips instead, but he continued to lie back on the grassy hillside, listening to Fern meander around and graze. The mare turned her ears forward when Duke burst from the undergrowth, Dixie-May on his back—but not for very long, as she slipped off the small stallion soon. He could hear the thump of her petite body hitting the ground, and the sound of her paws falling on the crunching grass as she called out for him.
Feeling mischievous, the Labrador mongrel did nothing—at least not until she had scrambled within reach of him. With a playful growl, he lunged up and wrapped his muscular arms around her, pulling her down on top of his toned body and caressing her face with happy, slobbery licks.
“Hey there, darlin’,” the dusty-furred man said, grinning so broadly his expression could just about be seen from the starlight. The grin faded soon, however, transforming into something gentler as he reached up to push some of her pale hair away from her pretty white face. “I missed you like hell.”
