Half-lidded eyes lifted from the petite woman snuggled against him to the gorgeous swath of stars in the dark sky. Their position in the valley grass gave them an unhindered view of the heavens while shielding them in return. He couldn’t remember how many times he’d looked to the stars while they traveled together, riding tirelessly on horseback as they made their journey to the region that might now be their home for the rest of their days. But this was different. It was beautiful, too beautiful for his hesitant tongue to put into a statement—though even a poet couldn’t do this night justice with all the words in the world. It just was.
Teeth nipped at his chin, causing the Labrador to look back down at her and her fierce little face. Her apologetic kiss softened the denial, but he only shook his head and touched his nose to hers. He would not argue, but he knew it wasn’t true. He’d proven his faults time and time again along the road and even here. He’d been the one unnoticed since they first met, the one padding quietly after her, waiting and watchful for whatever he could do to make her happy. He had been the one who needed to prove something to her, but finally he’d found it.
“Love you,” Wayne said suddenly—a pair of words, so simple, spoken almost every day. But there was a weird strangled desperation behind the words. Her body curled so hard against him stirred feelings he’d never been quiet blind to, but those sensations could not be explained aloud. He wasn’t eloquent enough. He only knew instinct as he’d relied on since his journey north, the wolf woken in him, and he wrapped his arms under her in such a way to slide her body up his so he could be the one to press his muzzle to her neck.
“I love you,” the cowboy repeated more quietly, his lips forming the words against her throat. He was a man in all ways but this now, but one might not have noticed the uncertain tension coiled in his body if not for the lightest trembling in the hands that continued to massage her back.
