The heartbeat of hooves

Was overwhelmed with Wayne threads for a while, so this is late... And this post sucks too.

Bark was reluctant to leave his new friend as his mother called to him, and he bumped the woman with his nose before trotting back to the mare’s side. Fern nibbled at his mane affectionately and watched him as he began to prance around her with high steps. He began to make a whole host of noises and movements that likely meant something, but the wolfdog turned his back on the chatting horses as he nodded at the girl.

Looking at her, it was hard to believe that she was the Sole’s daughter. Whereas her father was a dark giant, she was small and nearly pure white other than dark hair and tipped markings. He wondered if she simply happened to take more after her mother, who was a mystery to the cowboy. But staring at her was quickly turning awkward, especially as both of them were taken and quite happy with that arrangement.

Quite a troublemaker, the Labrador mongrel corrected, looking over his shoulder at Bark. He was leaning against his mother’s legs, trying to rub the saddle off his body, but Fern kept moving away from him. He smiled at the giant chestnut equine then gestured vaguely to them when Fia asked her question. The mare is Fern, the foal Bark.

He smiled, looking at the snow. All the horses ’re lovin’ the weather now. Gettin’ harder to handle; they know spring’s comin’. He looked back at her awkwardly; it was moments like these that he realized how difficult talking was if it didn’t involve the critters he knew like the back of his hand. A few moments passed in similar silence.

Uh, sorry, Wayne managed to get out. He didn’t know why he was apologizing.
