Pack life was as hectic as ever, and there would only be more to do when the last weeks of winter melted away into spring. The mares would foal, the weather would be nice enough to begin construction on the barn and other projects, and the entire region would see an influx of energy and life. With the dreary cold winter already a bustlin’ time for the cowboy, he could only imagine what would happen in the coming month.

The male had been taking one of those extremely rare breaks when the summons came from the courthouse. Rather than get annoyed at being roused from his catnap, however, he simply reached for his hat to plant it back on his head, getting up with a grunt and walking in the direction of the building. Evidently, something important was going on; the Sole wouldn’t call another meeting so soon after the last one if that wasn’t the case.

The Labrador mongrel stepped into the Great Hall, looking at those already gathered. His eyes fell on the excitedly fidgeting shape of Adelle, and the male broke out into a small smile as he put two and two together—a mentorship ceremony. He still remembered helping the then-sick girl and her grandfather toward Casa di Cavalieri, and he was glad that it had paid off. Reger had great insight and experience, and his granddaughter would grow up as one of the first children of the pack.

His attention drifted then, noting an oddly small pup in Hadley’s arms, one whose scent was off enough for him to realize it was a fox kit. His ears pricked, but he didn’t want to startle the child or the former slave by heading up to them. All he could do was stand and wait for the announcement to begin.

What if I’m her mentor? Wayne asked himself, and his eyes widened. He hadn’t really considered the possibility beforehand. He didn’t know if he’d be ready to take on that kind of responsibility in addition to his normal duties. There were others more suited—older, more experienced with fighting—but he knew that he’d have little say in the final decision. He frowned and crossed his arms, pondering this.
