Suddenly, there was commotion ahead of her. Startled, she raised her head to look, but through the brush she couldn't see anything. Snarls and growls pierced the air, and she thought she could hear bodies colliding. The coyote winced, turning back to the girl suddenly and grabbing her arm with a creamy hand. Her head flew back to let out more calls to her pack. "Sounds like a lie to me," she accused with a high-pitched growl, hoisting the girl up bodily and jabbing the firepoker into the small of her back. "Get on the horse." Sage wasn't the most assertive of girls, but she was armed and this girl wasn't. She had the whole pack, but this one was alone. She knew it, too, because the younger girl listened. The tawny woman turned, smirking where the pale wolf couldn't see, proud of herself.
The fight grew louder, and the hoofbeats farther away, and faster. Whatever animals they were trying to take may well be taken. They were too far, and Sage wanted to hold this girl. For questioning, for ransom, for something. Surely she was valuable. Dark ambers scanned the girl quickly before vaulting onto Lennon's back. It was hard to tell from her looks where she might rank in their pack, whichever one it might be. The girl was young, but clearly, she was brave, too.
Sage dug her heels into Lennon's sides and took off to find Xy'rin, or Jace, or anyone else. She wasn't sure who had headed off the group ahead, but it didn't sound good, and she would need help. The coyote was ashamedly incapable of fighting, and though she might try, she knew that she would be of less use there. Instead, she would find the others, show them her captive and tell them the story.
