Little boys don't stay little boys

The other day, when Octavius had tried to tell his mother that he wanted to move away, she instead informed him of the coming of age ceremony he and his brothers would have to participate in. There was to be a sacrificial killing, a reminder, and fasting to complete everything. That didn’t sound too hard, and the boy was almost excited to get going and start his mission. Thankfully he’d taken down a deer and ate nearly the entire thing, so his body was well stuffed and he had enough energy to run for a long while without absolutely having to eat. As soon as Naniko dismissed him, the boy shifted into his Optime form and went to get some supplies to begin his hunt.

A long length of twine, that he’d stolen from his mom, a long sharp rock, and a large square of leather made from a fox pelt. All of it was clutched in one of his hands as he navigated his way out of the caves. The sky was dark, moon casting only a little bit of light on the ground as he made his way into the forest, where the light vanished altogether. He stopped for a few moments to allow his eyes to adjust; this darkness was different than that of the caves. There was something about this night that had his fur standing on end, hackles raised and body tensed as he looked around. Noises and smells all blended together to create one big smorgasbord of confusion.

He HAD to get something, and quick. His piece had to be made by the next night…or he didn’t know what would happen. Crouching low, he held his head up and took a deep breath to gauge what animals were near enough to begin stalking. Of course, there was little to nothing living near the entrance to the caves, so he began running through the foliage, only stopping when the scent of wildlife grew stronger. Once again the young man crouched and took a sniff, locating a rabbit, a small herd of bedded deer, and a raccoon. The rabbit would be too easy, the deer too hard with just a knife and the inability to use his teeth…so the raccoon would live it’s last few moments as he looked for it.

Naniko’s howl reached Octavius’s ears as he was sliding the newly made necklace over his head. Glancing down, he took in the pieces and grinned happily before getting up and walking towards the room in which the ceremony was to take place. When he walked in, he saw his brothers there already with their pieces around their necks as well. Smiling at his mother, the already huge white boy trotted into the room and threw his arms around her for a tight hug. The brothers were ignored completely, as he wasn’t very fond of either of the idiots.

Grabbing the edge of his necklace, he lifted it over his head and held it out for his mother to inspect. The rib bones of a large raccoon hung from a long piece of black twine, and the teeth were stored in the small gris-gris in the middle. Attached to the twine, right behind the gris-gris pouch, was the fluffy striped tail of the raccoon. Pulling the little pouch open, he reached in with two fingers and brought out one of the eye teeth from the ‘coon and dropped it on his mother’s palm. "For you, mother. I love you."
