Word Count → 721 :: Hooray! Debut post with Lev. <33

“We’ve arrived just in time for spring, Wils,” Levent Kartal practically sang as the pair moved over the rugged terrain. The wind carried the tang of salt, and while that was enough to make the luperci feel sick to his stomach, he could push the feeling aside when he saw the amazing scenery. The deciduous trees were still naked from the winter that had overtaken the hemisphere, but smatterings of pine forest cropped up as they walked into the heart of the isthmus. He could smell small prey running through the undergrowth in the lowlands, and a flash of white showed that Wilson had detected the same thing. He came back with a lemming swinging from his jaws, his dark yellow eyes content and a purr rumbling from his chest.

The cat settled down next to one of the trees, and the wolf joined him, taking a seat and stretching. He looked around at the wilderness—wilderness that was the same to him as every other mile of land they’d passed to get here. There were pockets of old human settlements here and there, but such places seemed to be swallowed by the vegetation in this region. He wondered when they’d find another big city, and just how much farther it was across this land bridge.

“Amy spoke a lot about the northern packs,” Levent said after a while, leaning against the tree trunk. The cat flattened his ears but made no comment as he went on. “Should be easy enough—we’ll just walk around aimlessly and bump into what we will until we come across someplace interesting.”

Wilson shrugged. “Whatever you’d like—but let me have a kip first.” Yawning, he stretched out and rested his head on his paws, and the Turkish man smiled. He reached out to stroke the feline’s fur, eliciting a sleepy purr, and lifted his eyes to look at the wilderness once again.

Wandering was really all the odd couple could do. While he’d taken good mental notes on what the blonde dog had said the last time they’d met up, he wouldn’t know until he arrived whether or not he was right. There was still a few more days’ worth of travel before they crossed the isthmus and began to trickle into the actual region of Nova Scotia, but he still didn’t know if it would be worth it. These canines had a culture all their own, one that couldn’t be summed up with words. He’d have to meet different luperci to get a feel for it.

The catnap drifted on, Levent joining him on the soft pine needles, and when they woke the pair went on again. They trudged through marshy lowlands and avoided sight of the coastline until the aroma of roasted meat reached the canine’s nose. His mouth watered at the smell; he’d been eating all his meals raw which, while natural and not something that he hated, didn’t live up to the cuisine he’d been used to.

“This is a bad idea,” the tomcat growled, even as the merchant strolled in the direction of the smell. “If whoever it belongs to is in a nark…”

The brown wolf threw him a teasing look. “I can charm them out of their nark, benim ingiliz arkadaşım.” He continued to walk confidently through the woods, and Wilson trotted after him, muttering something like “smarmy bastard” under his breath.

The smell of the roast grew stronger as they finally reached a clearing, one optimal for a camp to be set up. The scent of food was overpowered by a canine one, and Levent stiffened at the edge of the trees, his blizzard blue eyes staring. He would never forget that scent, and all of his hidden misgivings disappeared as he waltzed forward with a grin, Wilson pressing close to his side with fur bristling.

“Amy!” Levent called, smiling from ear to ear. Yine tanışın!

He stopped in his tracks then, nostrils flaring. Even with the scent of smoking meat clouding his senses, he could smell other things—a young coyote reeking with fear, the reek of crows and caverns, and the telltale traces of milk and pups. One dark ear cocked back in his mess of hair, and while he still smiled, the expression was small and inquisitive as he bowed to the woman.
