The male could hardly find itself in him to move or respond or do anything, at least until the sliver of metal made him bark out a choked plea. He might have thrown himself in front of the sword had it not been doomed to simply embed itself in the ground far enough away from the escaped feline. But still, his hands trembled terribly, and he flattened them on the ground as he looked to the female for some sort of guidance, some sort of anything. He and Wilson fought many, many times before, but the language had jarred him. Hopefully this would be like any other occasion, the cat sulking for a few days—but there was more at stake now that they were in this new land.

He might have gone to get the cat, but her eyes held him. There was demonfire in them, the coldest kind. He’d found what he was looking for, perhaps, but what did that mean? What should he do with it now? He only gave his head a slow shake at her words, not resisting as she pulled his clothing away from the proof of their connection, the deep scar that marked his flesh. He looked at the pink skin striping his brown fur.

One badly trembling hand reached for the drink this time, and he swallowed several mouthfuls before setting the bottle down. Heat flushed through him, the real thing compared to the small taste she’d teased him with when they’d kissed. It burned in his gut, burned through all of him. He was on fire.

“Saçmalık,” Levent said quietly, and his teeth shone as he looked at her. “Complete and utter bullshit.” His hands fumbled over his shirt, and he peeled it away from his body to fully expose the scar. “You want something, but it isn’t sweet love.” It was not love, not any of the several kinds the Greeks had words for. It wasn’t even unbridled lust—not the physical kind. She wanted something, she wanted him, she wanted and he wanted to know what.
