Dhiate sat enraptured by her voice. Infection? Virus? Was he going to die? She didn't seem to think so. She said he was okay, and she appeared to have the same 'virus' as he did. Maybe that girl he'd talked to hadn't lied. Maybe she had been telling the truth and he'd just been to blind to see it. He looked down in shame. He wished he could tell her he was sorry that he hadn't believed her.
That name. So she knew him too. All of his previous trust vanished and without thinking, he rose to his feet. The world spun as he stood there. So this was how the birds felt from so high in the sky. It was more than disorienting. It was rather frightening to be up this high. With a shudder, he collapsed back to the ground like a babe just learning to walk. He put his head between his knees and breathed deeply to get his heart rate back to normal. Then he remembered.
"So you know him too? If I ever see that lowlife's face again, I'll rip it to shreds." His voice broke on the last few words. He hated Hadley. Hated him with more than a passion. Hadley had left him when he was most frightened. And he had an epiphany. What exactly was it that gave him the virus? His voice was little more than a whisper. "It was him wasn't it? He did it? That's why he ran?" He lifted his hands to his face. Almost as it they had a life of their own, they ran through his newly grown hair. Had Hadley done this to him?
