As the dusty hybrid swung wide on his horse, the other wolf came on, barreling like a train. He was utterly heedless of the mare and her rider in his path, and Ithiel saw the swing of the sword. The wolf meant to cut him down and ride straight through -- Ithiel saw this and gave a cry of frustration through his clenched teeth, digging his heels in hard. Lystra gave a surge forward and he was clear, past the wolf. A sudden red-hot line seared across his back, however, and he knew he had not altogether avoided the swing of the man's sword. He could still move, so it was little more than a flesh wound -- the location, mid-back, meant a more serious wound would have been one to paralyze him, almost certainly.

His chestnut horse trumpeted her rage and fear at the scent of blood, and plunged headlong back toward the mountain, where the dusky-furred coyote saw his companions still fighting. Lystra's sides heaved as she galloped toward the pair of coyotes engaged with the first. Ithiel had an arrow nocked in his bowstring, and he was turned in the saddle, but the big wolf was weaving, forcing his horse into a strange zigzag to throw the dusky coyote's aim.
