There had, even if she did not understand it, been a secondary purpose in sending her brother away. Without his physical presence, Salvia had been utterly warped into the whims of her uncle-King. Sirius commanded her now as no other could, and even her devotion to her brother was not what it had once been. She loved him, but she would perhaps defend another before coming to his aid. It suited her rank, of course—she belonged to the Thistle King as all of his subjects did.
She shot him a sharp look at the tone; was it jealousy, she heard? Green eyes narrowed slightly, pupils shrinking, but the moment was lost as suddenly as he motioned to the barn. Her expression shifted instantly, as if the hint of darkness was all but gone. “Yes,” she explained. “We have many horses now, and breeding has proven worthwhile.” Her steps carried her forward, Nacht moving at the even pace of his heritage. Oh how she longed to use him as a true mount; he would make fighting from horseback a reality for her.
“Come, I will show you the foals. Then we should go home; the place no longer smells like you,” she added, and cast a wistful glance in his direction.
