The Optio scowled, albeit good-naturedly, when her friend smirked at her companion. She’d not made it a secret what she thought about animal companions, although for all her complaining she saw the raven as an equal. He was wiser than her, at least, even if his high speech was stunted and accented. It was nice to have eyes in the sky, too—almost worth the humiliation of being a glorified perch.
The dusky hybrid picked up on her faintly troubled air, getting straight to the point about asking why. Her full ear tipped back against her slender skull, and she was about to explain herself when the claws shifted on her back.
“Aquila,” Stark croaked respectfully. Vesper blinked and turned to acknowledge the bronze coyote striding toward them.
Ezekiel addressed the issue of the wolf attack, and she lifted her blue eyes to Helotes’ to see his reaction. He’d already been through a lot with the execution of his brother—something Ves secretly praised—and not many had been prepared for this attack despite the incident with Halo. She knew she hadn’t, paranoid as she was. Wolves would always harass the coyote clan, but this was more akin to war.
