Helotes suggested warriors accompanying scouts, and Vesper nodded after a moment. “It’d help,” she murmured. The safety of the scouts had been forefront in her mind after the strike, and she knew that most of them weren’t strong enough to face an enemy alone. Many were young or inexperienced; truthfully, she could only name Ithiel when she thought of those who would be able to hold their own.
“Ravens helping too.” The bird spoke plainly, still perched on her back. She smirked faintly and nodded. She’d been less than thrilled about the prospect long ago, when Stark had resisted her attempts to get him to spy for her, but she’d learned the use of a pair of eyes in the sky since. The coyotes’ safety was often their safety, after all.
Her dusky friend professed his loyalty to the Aquila, and she watched him warily, wondering if this was spurred on by passion or something else. When he asked for Ezekiel’s blessing, however, her head jolted up with surprise as well. Although she’d known Helotes and Zana were friends, she hadn’t thought that the muscular male and the pygmy woman would develop feelings beyond that. A congratulatory grin spread over her mouth, although she resisted the urge to go and tackle him; Ezekiel’s presence requested some dignity from the Optio, or so she thought.
