"Is it broken?" she asked, nodded towards the other woman. "Do you have somewhere you can go?"

Cassandra was somewhat perplexed at the idea that the tree would be safer than the ground, but she didn't comment on it. The ground was solid and stable, and that was reason enough for her to stay there. Certainly higher perches had their advantages, but the albino could only think of tactical ones regarding ranged weaponry, line of sight, and ambush. Rest was better on the ground, where you could feel the vibration of incoming company, footsteps, hoofbeats. Foliage provided visible shelter, but an antagonist standing under the tree can easily look up.

The woman was similarly surprised that she might have reminded the stranger of someone. In all her travels, she had only met one other creature with her strange coloration, and it had been a bird, a little hawk, and she had watched him die. She had heard of others, had heard that perhaps they were not so rare, but she had not seen them for herself. "Cassandra," she introduced, then asked: "Who did you think I was?" The hybrid cocked her head and licked another bit of blood from her muzzle (it was the last of it, she thought).
