Her ears folded back again, asking the councilwoman's forgiveness for this transgression. The rejection of the idea, no matter how gently, stung her deeply and made her feel like an outsider again. The pale woman seemed to shrink in on herself slightly although still trying to stand tall despite her obvious awareness that she had done something wrong.
In her hands the babies struggled weakly against the ivory fur, wanting to go back into their warm, soft blanket. Looking down upon them Gemma almost missed Ulilohi's changing expression, she raised her head to see the flash of guilt before it was swept away by the unfolding smile and the taller woman took back her earlier verdict.
