Isabella sat beneath the tall spruce, resting her back against the rough bark as the smell of crisp evergreens flowed around her. The gypsy reached her hand up and pulled a low branch toward her. Small needles were pulled into her palm, parting unwillingly from their nodes. Sticky sap tried to stick to her fingers but she wiped it on the grass at her feet. The needles twitched in her palm, touched by the breeze. Sighing, she crushed the leaves in her balled up fist, letting the scent seep out of the broken tendrils. Opening her palm, she sniffed the stronger sent, exhaling loudly as she leaned back. The needles fell from her hand and she rubbed the greenish liquid from her palm.
It was such a good day and her motivation to do much ebbed. Her chest no longer ached. She touched the thin line across her chest, tracing it from its start at her shoulder to below her jugular notch. It was thin and it barely parted the fur, though it had taken a few extra days to regrow the pelt. Her hair was, mercifully, long enough to cover it up mostly, but her dislike of the mark almost brought bile to her throat. Whenever she peered at her reflection and her hair happened to have fallen poorly, she would growl in distaste and instantly readjust her mane to cover the thin scar. Now she touched it beneath her mane, feeling the part in her pelt.
A deft hand slipped over her upper body. No, the scar was not easy to spot but it was still there and it did not detract entirely. Sighing, the woman dropped her hand. She had attempted a thousand and a half curses on the woman who dared to cut her, but it was more than she knew. Her skill did not come in curses for her magic was of the earth and not of the darkness. Still, Isabella felt morose for the damage done. What sane person would have her now, with so glaring a thing atop a breast?
