He was too late. She was going to die and he didn't get to tell her how he felt. His mind cast him images that he didn't want to see- the flash of metal swinging towards Lilin's face, the way her body crumpled to the ground as if her string had just been cut. He couldn't quite help the nausea rolling his stomach as he thought of the utter panic and desperation as he pushed himself harder. He'd seen most of their confrontation, the physical bits at least, and he'd been running as hard as he could to get there. He hadn't seen the dark warrior pulling out her sword until it came arching towards Lilin. And then he was moving faster than he ever had before. The warrior had backed off and fled as Saul got there, skidding to a halt and cradling Lilin's head. Her eyes were closed shut and he thought the worst had happened. He'd scooped her up, so delicately to try and avoid spinal damage and moved to take her home.

The more medically geared part of his brain was listening to the steady thump of her heart, the shallow breathing that was testament to her survival. She was alive and he had to try to convince the panicking part of him that this wasn't the end. She was unconscious, her brain shutting down to avoid the physical pain of the blow to the head. He'd read about all of this- she could get a concussion and she could go to sleep and not wake up again. Never before had Saul wished so deeply that he could squeeze her tight enough to tuck her into his heart and keep her safe. She was fragile, so delicate that he worried every minute of every day.

He walked on auto-pilot, green eyes only just registering the dark green humps of Jordheim before he was kicking open his door. He couldn't lay her on the floor like he had with Turnip- he moved to his bedroom, lowering himself to the floor and in turn lowering Lilin to his bed. She was still unconscious, but her breathing was beginning to get a little more regular and he thought he saw her eyelids fluttering. With a shaking voice, he ran trembling fingers down her cheek, wondering what he should do to wake her up. "Lili... Lili come back. Wake up... please." He whispered, a tear spilling over and down his cheek. He'd been too late to help her, and now he hoped beyond anything that he wasn't too late to save her.
