Neela had become intimately familiar with the cracked white painted wall and the small window with its view of the river that lay to the right of her bed; after all, it was pretty much the only thing that she had seen the last few days.

Ever since the fight a few days ago, ever since Neela had been forced to kill the last link she had to her old home and life in order to save her own, she had just lain listlessly in her bed, neither eating or talking or even sleeping except when she could help it; the only thing worse than the mixture of shame and guilt running through her head when she was awake was the nightmares it brought forth when she was asleep.

It wasn't just the collie's guilt that kept her bedbound. While she had been lucky in that she had suffered no broken bones aside from her ribs it felt like her entire body was just one large collection of knife wounds and injured muscles. Her left leg could no longer support her weight after the wound had been reopened, her right hand trembled and refused to close fully, her tail had a glancing wound that stung like a papercut whenever it moved… countless little wounds all working together to leave her in a very bad condition.

Her stomach rumbled but Neela ignored both the sound and the growing pain that was beginning to accompany it. Neela hadn’t been eating as much as was healthy lately and her latest few days of fasting had left her supplies of food at almost empty. Despite the pain she couldn’t bring herself to eat; the very thought of eating anything made her nauseous, and so she let the pain from her stomach lose itself amongst the other pains assailing her.
