Set at the Great Tribe, nighttime. Udanvti (deer spirit guide) is visible, and Unatsi is angsting about the Tribe not liking him when he does nothing for the Tribe. :|

A couple of years had passed since the kidnappings, and Unatsikanogeni still did not feel like he had been welcomed back into the Tribe. It was something that haunted him every day of his life, and he moved but meekly through the huts toward the border he'd guarded once upon a time. It had been so easy then, doing no more than staring out at the wilderness or running alongside the hunters as they worked. The title of Ayastigi had truly been no more than a title, until he'd been expected to do something -- and then it became a burden the red wolf could not bear.

He scowled as he stood at the edge of the territory, looking out as he'd done numerous times before, wishing that he could throw his past behind him. He was ready to cast the Tribe aside and go on to where luperci would take care of him, not give him the stink-eye when he shuffled past. Their still-judging eyes made him uncomfortable, and so he shirked his duties even more, and the cycle repeated itself until the kindling threatened to catch fire in his chest.

Tohiju, Unatsi? breathed a mild voice behind him. His notched ear flicked back, but he was sullenly silent until quiet steps approached his side. This time he did turn his head, looking at the doe. Her soft, long face was as patient and gentle as ever, but there was a drive behind those herbivore eyes that no Tribemember could mistake. Her ears came forward. Dohadvne?

Vtla gohusdi, Unatsi responded tartly. As is always the case. He wrapped his opposite shoulder with his white arm, his posture turning uncertain, withdrawn, as it usually was when it didn't burst into violence. He couldn't stand her interrogations since she'd shown herself to him, but like any luperci raised in the Tribe, he understood the wisdom in the spirit guide. He wasn't so hateful toward the Tribe that he would forsake her words; that would be doing insult to the culture he loved more than to the wolves around him.

Udanvti sighed but did not move, only staring out past the border with him. Behind them the Great Fire crackled and cast its light, while the stars on the horizon flickered in and out of sight.
