Never play with fire

There was a Something that was annoying Nate. The Something was glowing very brightly, up ahead, and he was ever so curious as to what it was. The pup ran around in circles eagerly, scratching at various huts and making a racket. He wasn't meant to be outside his house, without his mother and father accompanying him, but he didn't really understand the concept of obedience yet. He did what he was told, most of the time, but usually it had to be within an hour of being told, otherwise he just forgot. Nate-River let out a whine and scrambled on top of a fencing pole quite ungracefully, his neck stretching out to try and see what the Something was. It was red and gold, and very pretty. He let out another whine, because he didn't know how to get closer to the Something, and this time someone heard him. Payne, his sister, piped up from behind him. Whats it, Nate? What?... Nate-River sent his sister a scowl and she growled at him before shimmying her way back off to wherever she'd came from. Nate assumed she was going back to her mother.

The thought of his mother made Nate anxious. He loved his mother, but he realised now that he was doing something wrong, so he had to hide before he got told off. The boy leapt down from the fence-post with an "oof!", and he made his wobbly way forwards, oversized paws pit-pattering on the ground enthusiastically. His dramatic gait sped up, and soon he was zig-zagging through the huts like there was no tomorrow. ZOOOOOOM! Nate-River cried, his tail wagging and heart beating happily. Eventually, the huts cleared and he could see the Something again. But it was closer this time, and he could see it much better. It was red and glowing, and huge, and not red, but orange, but red.. and yellow - then silver, then-... Nate caught himself and shook his head vigorously, tearing his eyes away from the Great Fire. Except he didn't know it was the Great Fire, not yet.

The puppy hung his head low and rested his tail inbetween his legs as he approached the Something closer, and closer, until he was almost touching it. He could feel warmth radiating from the fire, yet it didn't make him flinch, but grin. He was an untainted white colour with black ears and crown, but at this moment, standing so close to the fire, he almost looked translucent. El-oh. he greeted the Something. Wants to be Nate's fwend? he asked the fire reluctantly. Nate no got fwends. in reply, the fire spat some sparks into his nose, and Nate screamed and ran a couple of steps back, pawing at his nose as it burnt. The pain only lasted a second but already he felt a lot less brave. Not nice. Meanie. he accused, wounded. He tottered around the flames for a while, then on the edge of his vision spotted a small mound of bones. They were the remains of a little bird, nothing but the skeleton left. Nate picked it up in his mouth gingerly, then waddled back up to the fire. Pwfrresent? he asked, setting the bones down. He coughed up a bone that had managed to lodge itself in his throat, then looked back up again, bleary eyed. Pressie fer yuh. It's a pretty, maybe yer put in hair? he suggested oh-so-wisely.
