The latest patrol had ended up proving itself unique. Anatole had confronted a scrawny wolf beyond their borders, scavenging on some smidgen of a meal. After demanding he leave, the stupid thing had tried to pick a fight, driven by the madness of hunger. Unsurprisingly his massive weight advantage had sent the loner running, but Anatole certainly looked all scuffed up and had an oozing gash on one shoulder. At Donoma’s insistence, reminding him of the last wound suffered, he had gone back towards the Village with the intention of cleaning himself up and reporting the incident to one of the leaders. Some pack, without any warriors! the starving thing had shouted. It seemed that word of this disgrace was even reaching the lowest places of the world.
When he finally reached the clearing, his ears perked up at a sound of a new sort. A child’s voice, high and loud, carried above the birdsong and constant snap and breath of the Great Fire. Anatole, still bloodied and slightly disheveled, wondered briefly if it might have been wise to clean himself before coming. He snorted bullishly and trampled on into the Village from the edge of the woods, veering towards Uliohi’s home.
