Various sounds filled the afternoon air. It was a symphony the sort Jaden had never been witness to. Whinnies of horses, calls of sheep, mooing cows, chickens that wouldn’t stop their incessant cawing and cooing, and the grinding of wooden wheels on the grassy dirt were constant background noise to the stressful trip back toward Sangi’lak. And the former assassin sat atop a wagon leading it all. What an ordeal. A trained warrior, an experienced killer, and now a leader and he still felt he was being stretched thin. There were so many animals. Two horses pulled the wagon which was filled with boxed chickens, a roster, and a group of piglets. Behind them were a ram, a few cows, some sheep, and then a few bulls behind them. All were bound loosely together and tied to the cart to keep them from wandering. X’ies was back there somewhere too, not tied up unfortunately, but making sure it all didn’t fall apart like it felt it was so close to doing.

All it would take was for a few to freak out. There was more than enough meat being pulled behind the four wheeled cart that they could easily tear away the ropes tethering them in place. The slick tongued merchant who sold most of the animals had been reassuring. He said that so long as the cows and bulls, sheep and ram were separated that there would be no trouble. Thus far he had been right. But for how much further could this unnatural scene last? The reins in Jaden’s hands felt alien. Never before had he driven a cart. He hadn’t even ridden one horse before. Now there were two connected to these leather straps? He had been given a “crash course” on driving while they were in Freetown. It was still madness!

The obsidian man flinched as talons dug into his shoulder. And this damn bird too! He growled with irritation at it but the feathered legs next to his ear only shifted slightly to the softer parts of his muscled shoulder. It was as if the raptor knew he was to be a gift and the threat of Jaden’s teeth was hallow at best. He was more irritated by the constantly tense state of his dark new owner than fearful of punishment for his behavior. Jaden didn’t know or care enough about the feathered thing to get that information. He only understood that it kept pinching him with those claws and he couldn’t kill it because it was for his leader. Perhaps he should untie it from his arm and tether the thing to the wagon with the chickens. See how it felt about being back there with the rest of the dumb birds. But he quickly dismissed the notion. Being bitten and clawed at while he was trying to pilot this cursed cart wouldn’t do. So he would just sit and deal with it. He hoped X’yrin would like it. It had cost them the last of their trading goods and was the reason they couldn’t hire an actual driver for the cart. But there wasn’t enough concentration to spare for thoughts of X’yrin and the wounded relationship they now shared. He could only watch the path ahead and listen tentatively for X’ies to call forth with a problem.

Jaden does. Jaden speaks. Jaden thinks.
