Unatsi was very, very good at sitting and feeling sorry for himself. No, he was a downright champion. It helped that he attributed most of the blame for his pathetic excuse of a life to others, all those who apparently wronged him, but it helped even more that he could whine woefully for a remarkable duration of time. While his vocal pauses and other mutterings could get repetitive, he had mastered the art of imagination, especially when applied to the worst-case-scenario.
An odd bout of common sense urged him to do this blabbering silently, and so the red wolf sat in his unimpressive lupus form, his head bowed and his eyebrows knitted in an expression of fierce concentration. The images in his mind were, of course, grandly sketched scenes of what would happen should he continue to sit here thinking about what would happen if—well, it was all very redundant. Added to these scenes was bitter mental commentary that served to amuse him, and he would likely have been content to sit and feel sorry about himself being so bored if not for a flicker of movement at the top of his line of sight.
His head snapped up immediately, and his green eyes found the suggestion of another creature moving toward him—but with quiet steps, almost catlike. He blinked, wondering if it was a mountain lion coming near, which didn’t give him the same jolt of fear it should have; maybe it was because he’d known people with the big cats as spirit guides.
Una’s own special brand of logic caught up with his visual and auditory observations, and he called out into the woods: “Helloooo?”
