Silvano did not know what he was going to do. The court did not seem to have any chickens but they could certainly use them. And Giselle could use something to do, and her love of animals was a strong reminder at this moment. But it was just a chicken! He had been expecting a fabulous creature of cerise or beryl feathers. This thing had off-white plumes that he had better be thankful were of the silken variety rather than the rough version.
"This is a chicken," he repeated, much more firmly as though trying to reassure himself that this really was just a chicken and not a mirage in his hands. Or he was going crazy. But Skye had a valid point. How could he dismiss such useful facts? The way the woman described them, he half expected their tears to heal his wounds like a phoenix aflame. It would be nice to bring something useful to the court to show that he and Giselle were not moochers coming to steal their food and belongings. "These are the only birds you have, correct?" he asked again, eyes bearing into her as though willing it to be a lie. "They're wonderful and Giselle will love any animal handed to her, though it's hardly a pet."
The hen squawked at him and struggled a bit in his grip. He eased his hands on it and the bird relaxed instantly, and Silvano dared it to crap on his feet. He would gladly eat it on the way home and bring back his mate a pair of drumsticks. "What do you feed these things?"
