His ears were not quite used to hearing tones of derision or disbelief, and Skoll missed most of the sourness behind the tone. “Yeah, fun,” he answered with another perplexed tilt of his head. Was this girl a little slow or something? She sounded almost like she didn’t grasp the concept, and he could understand an adult frowning on all that, but she was young like him; she should know. Even the prissy, adult-like girl pups he’d played with in the Court had given in to a game of chase every once in a while, usually with him as the intended target.

The glare she threw him was less subtle than her curled lip, and his ears flattened defensively. He drew himself up on instinct, as if a puff of his chest could deflect the glowering as Superman deflected bullets. It was a bit harder to bear the brunt of her acidic tone, and her last sharp question pierced the prince’s armor. He deflated, green eyes widening with realization then turning to the floor guiltily. “I don’t get tired,” he growled half-truthfully, but even the vigorous teenager wore out eventually. After all his patrolling, all of his vigilance around his homeland, he’d left himself open for attack, and it frustrated him.

This frustration gathered in his throat like bile, and he let some of that bile pour out as he threw a challenging look at the willowy girl. “So what was this useful thing you were doing?” he barked up at her, though he half expected an actual answer. He was grasping blindly for something to use as a shield, and the saying about good offenses and defenses worked well enough the other way around.
