It was not long before Skoll began to sense that something was wrong, but it took him quite a while to pinpoint what the matter was. When he did, his nostrils flaring, he froze and turned his head slowly from side to side; he could smell blood, canine blood, and that was never a good thing.
His heart throbbed a frantic beat in his ribcage, and he let his claws sink into the ground as he tried to steady himself and breathe deeply. He thought of his mother lying injured, each gasp an effort, and of the mohawked male limping tortuously down the stairs. His ears flattened against his broad secui skull, and a rumble came up from his chest.
And then—Skoll was ambushed! He barely had time to grunt when a large, dark shape came lunging from the foliage. The form struck him, sending him rolling, but he quickly snarled and aimed a heavy paw at the face of his attacker, hoping to smack them senseless. He regained his footing shortly after, his hackles rising and his bristling tail curled high over his back, saliva dangling in strings from his gnashing jaws, until suddenly his green eyes widened with recognition and he was only a startled boy with drool hanging from his lips.
“Hey, hey, you!” the young warrior barked in eloquent surprise, and threw his whole muscular body backwards in case the girl didn’t recognize him so quickly. Blood dripped from her fur, and he was worried that he’d hurt her somehow, even if he couldn’t see any cerise staining his paws.
