a judgment day

She should be happy, so happy and yet she was not. They lived yes but only barely. The multicolored bunch at her side did not act as her first litter had. There were no squeaks and they hardly moved at all, but for four of them she held hope, the fifth one though, the youngest... Jace was already preparing herself for the death that was surely coming. She, for it was a little girl, had not moved at all since her birth, not woken up beyond a vague stirring to weakly feed. The woman was filled with despair. This was her punishment, she was sure of it. She had broken her own family, and the scream of her son echoed around her mind, it drove her to insanity and she had long ago destroyed what little furniture she hadn't piled against the front and back doors.

She stiffened as Skye's voice pounded through the house. Her fur bristling at the challenge she felt to her children's existence. She didn't want to leave them but she had to answer the Alpha's demand. She was loathe to be parted and dragged a warm blanket across their small fragile forms lest they freeze to death with their bodies ineffective at staying warm. Her footsteps were heavy against the wooden floor despite how much weight she had lost. She was almost gaunt, the bones in her ribs just visible. Her voice was weak, despite her protestation,

"Please leave. None are welcome here."
