He was confused because Thana had made it clear where she stood. She wanted nothing to do with Jaden if she could not have him for herself. A hollow spot beat in his heart now and painfully reminded him of the choice he could not make. But it didn’t last long. Something about the woman before him had changed. Something that now set of that instinctual feeling of grave danger that twists in the gut and pleads that you find a new place to stand that is nowhere near where you are now. He watched her close the distance between them uncomfortably and listened to the words she hissed at him. They were not the words of a loving heart but of malice.
The woman he used to love reached for him and he automatically shoved her hand away from his fur. They were not on speaking grounds, much less touching. Then he saw the real reason in her one working eye that she’d come to find him. The first scratch at his face was blocked simply because his hand already held onto hers. But the second attack was only slightly anticipated. Jaden jumped back and held where he had been cut by her claws. Small droplets of red stained the white of his belly and he gawked at it in shock for a moment.
That moment was short before his features lit up in anger and horror that someone he loved could attempt something meant to hurt him like that out of nowhere. Perhaps love was not a strong a force to females, he thought to himself in shock. The jab was unfair at his mate for she had more reason than Thana when she had attacked him but he didn’t draw that now. He was to shocked and still trying to figure out what Thana’s motives were. Thana! What are you doing?! He swung to the left of her to open an escape route into Sangi’lak if he needed it. His hands came up to guard himself should she try for another attack. The male wasn’t sure if he had it in him to truly defend himself like he would against any normal enemy, but what choice did he have now?
