Dated 4 days after Keldava finds Devini

Propped up on her elbows and letting the last says of the half setting sun sink into her dark fur, Keldava stared at the kitten she had unwittingly acquired and wondered what the hell she was going to do. The kitten was a handsome looking thing and Keldava couldn’t help but take a moment to admire her, dark black, bright orange and pure white colouring all mingling in a dappled pattern which in the setting sun seemed to almost glow in some places and absorb the light in others. Still as handsome as the kitten was that didn’t change the fact that Keldava had absolutely no clue how to care for a young cat.

Oh, Levent had told her the basics, what to feed her, how to check that she was healthy and such but there was a big difference between raising a baby animal healthy and raising it properly and Keldava was worried she was going to fuck something up with the cat.

With a sigh she turned her attention back to it. The kitten was in the same place as before, curled up tightly in a ball. She was a timid thing, which was to be expected considering that her mother and siblings had been torn apart in front of her just days ago. Hopefully the cat’s youth would help her adjust quicker as she grew but for now she seemed to spend all her time curled up in a scared little ball, barely moving to eat or drink without prompting. Gazing sadly at the kitten Keldava pushed herself up into a cross legged position, picking her up gently and placing her in Keldava’s lap.

The kitten mewled, a scared sound, but she also seemed to recognise Keldava’s scent somewhat as she uncurled slightly, her head emerging from where it had been tucked against her stomach to reveal the kitten’s most striking feature, the one that Keldava had named her for. In the right light the kitten’s eyes could be taken for little emeralds; they were primarily a deep, vivid green shot through with streaks of lighter green and, here and there around the edges, white.

Unable to think of a name in normal language Keldava had resorted to her family’s tongue, Svinka, to name the kitten. Devinitka, the word for emerald, was an obvious choice to her but it sounded to long so she had gone for a shortened version; Devini. Keldava being Keldava she had started shortening that even further on occasion, sometimes referring to the little kitten as Vini. Either way Devini had no protests over her name and was starting to respond to it.

Wanted or not, prepared for or not Keldava couldn’t abandon Devini now; her mother was dead and her father nowhere to be seen, like it or not Keldava was all that the little kitten had. Smiling at the little bundle of fur Keldava half unsheathed her claws and began tickling Vini under the chin, her smile growing wider as the easily distracted kitten started to purr at her attentions.
