Life and How to Live It

Just as he added that last detail to his drawing, the luperci caught the scent of a strange creature nearby. The scent smelled like something he had been around back when he lived at the barn with his family. Just as he was trying to think of what it was, the creature sat down by him. Edgar turned toward it and then realized what it was. A cat! There was a small family of cats that had lived in the barn too, but they never got along that well with his other relatives and family members. The only dog that the cats got along with was Edgar. They even let him witness the mother cat give birth. A few weeks after the kittens were born, the mother nudged one of the kittens toward Edgar; it was the smallest of the litter and she was letting him keep it. So the dog took the kitten along with him and slept with it that night, but when he woke up that morning the scent of a dead cat was in the air. He later found out that day that his father had killed it. Thinking that it was Edgar who killed her baby, the mother went over to him the next night while he was sleeping and scratched him. Hopefully this cat wouldn't scratch him. The boy then stuck out his hand to scratch gently behind the feline's ears; he had remembered that his little kitten had liked that.
