It was amazing how much the presence of a small feline on her shoulder helped Keldava over her nervousness. If anything actually happened then Devini would be worse than useless – Keldava wouldn’t be able to fight properly while worrying about her safety – but the kitten’s presence still made Keldava feel better and for the first time in a while she was able to leave Arte’s territory without even a hint of worry in her mind.

Her sword also helped there. Keldava had gone without her weapons for the most part but had attached the sword and its scabbard onto her belt more to get used to it’s weight on her hip than because it would actually be useful – her hand still hadn’t healed enough to let her use a knife for anything other than gentle cutting, never mind something as heavy as her sword, Keldava had barely drawn it since getting it. Still to a casual glance her scarred hand still looked fully operational and between the full sized sword on her left hip and the knife on her right she was fairly obviously armed, enough to scare off any casual attacker looking for easy prey she hoped.

It did Keldava good to get out of the territory. Lately she had been restless and angry; every little thing that her hand prevented her from doing made her more angry towards Jace, every time she looked in a mirror and saw the scar on her face. She wanted someone to talk to, to rant and rave at and get her anger out but she felt awkward talking to the adults about such and the only Luperci she knew her age were her siblings, none of which she wanted to upset more by subjecting them to her rantings. Devini was no good to talk to; while she knew the kitten could grow up intelligent and even speak high speech for the moment she seemed to barely understand any of Keldava’s words, responding more to her tone and actions.

Devini mewled insistently and Keldava realised she had been staring off into space for some time and Devini had started chewing on her ear to get her attention. Grinning playfully she gently flicked the young cat across one of her own ears; small and pointy unlike Keldava’s which were long and flopped over half way up. The small, multicoloured cat – Calico she had learnt was the name for Devini’s colouring – was perched on Keldava’s shoulder, tiny claws digging into her fur to keep her steady. Keldava didn’t know much about feline life cycle but she could easily tell that her newfound companion was stil young and not fully grown; she could barely keep up with Keldava when she was walking slowly, never mind the quick pace that Keldava kept when wandering the woods, so she preferred to ride on her shoulder.

An odd scent caught Keldava’s attention and she paused for a moment. The scent that had caught at her nose was faint but familiar, though Keldava couldn’t place it for the life of her. Curiously she bent down carefully and rooted through the grass. Her searching revealed some dried out flowers, arrayed in an obviously artificial pattern. Keldava gazed at the flowers curiously, twirling one between her fingers and watching as the withered petals dropped off the stem.
