Someday...

I'll dance amongst the stars

There was a strange sensation in the air, one that did not quite fit the pack nestled high against the mountains hip. The skies were clear, stars twinkling merrily above, but the air was stuff, like a hot rain had just passed. This strange air seemed to be coming from the ocean, perhaps a storm was coming, but he couldn’t be certain. Whatever it was, it was causing the humidity inside the communal den to rise to the point of being nearly unbearable, and so, the dark knight had departed to rest under the velvet heavens.

The world was beginning to grow more and more silent as the days went by; at one point and buzz and chirps of crickets had been maddeningly loud, but now, they were so subdued then one did pipe up next it him, he had to lift his head to investigate. It was obviously summer was waning into fall, and with it too did his heart wane. It had been several weeks since Titania’s disappearance from his side, and though the hole left in his heart no longer ached, it still was a hollow void in his chest. X’yrin had managed to give him some hope, and told him to guard his heart but always leave it vulnerable to love. But how could he do so? Titania had been his first mate, his first true love, and now it was like she had died. The fact that her body still lived was haunting; her beautiful features still could smile, frown, laugh; but none of it would be from any memory of him. This is probably what hurt him and disturbed him the most.

Then there were the females in New Dawn; surprisingly, strangely, the heat scent had suddenly faded from the pack. It was odd, and it could only mean one thing; pregnancy. The idea thrilled and frightened Zalen, but it was exactly what he had been hoping for wasn’t it? The renewal of life in the form of offspring could perhaps fill the void in his heart in the shape of three puppies that never had the chance to take their first breath, and a woman who no longer existed.

Zalen’s eyes were suddenly drawn to a slight movement in the distance; he was lying amongst the trees, completely invisible in the shadows of the night, but the female who emerged into a clearing was suddenly lit up like the moon by the starlight. It was Adonia, and he was immediately aware of the way she moved, the way she smelled, and he got to his feet. At first he did not move, but then he crept out from the darkness into the clearing beside her. He stepped gingerly around her, despite his massive Optime form, and leaned down to sniff at her, before chancing a questioning and affectionate lick onto her muzzle.
