[MaMa] don't let go

Hati tipped back his muzzle and howled again, calling desperately for help. If Edgar could not hear him, maybe the goose or the horses would react in some way to alert him. It was a long shot. They were far away from any others, having chosen solitude in their forest. He bit his lip in concentration, digging his claws into the wooden beam with the effort it took to support his weight with one arm. Slowly, gingerly, he freed his injured wrist, gasping as it was released into the cold air. His fingers had gone numb, and now the circulation was returning in a most unpleasant manner. Hati grunted, making one last strained attempt to pull himself up onto the roof, but his lean strength was already spent. He would be bruised and battered, and if he was unlucky he would break another bone, but he would be alright after time healed his wounds. Edgar would nurse him back to health, patiently and lovingly. Hati would put his fate in the hands of the one he loved. He shut his eyes tightly, holding his breath as he let go of the roof, flinging his arms wide as he fell backward. It was going to hurt.

There was a sickening crunch as his dark body hit the rocky ground.

He lay on his back, stunned for a moment. He could not seem to breathe -- shock, his mind told him in a detached way. Attempting to move caused a paroxysm of fierce pain to radiate through his chest, and he coughed, struggling to draw air. What had happened? Dimly, his pale eyes struggled to focus. He could see the bright leaves littering the ground beside him. Brilliant yellow, burnished orange, and dark crimson... too much crimson. Why was there so much red? He coughed again, the spasm forcing his head to loll from side to side. He was cradling his wrist against his chest, but he could no longer feel the pain there. He felt cold.

Hati wheezed, trying to call out for help, but barely managing a whisper. Had he misjudged the distance of the drop? His thoughts were hazy, he was having difficulties concentrating on anything. He coughed again as he exhaled, and that time he saw it -- flecks of dark red spattering from his mouth, speckling color against the leaves. Confused, he raised his head, trembling with the effort. There was a pool of crimson spreading from his body. His blood, he was lying in a puddle of his blood. Panicked, Hati tried to cry out, mustering a wordless scream that deteriorated into a painful fit of coughing. Why was it so hard to breathe?

He laid his head back against the cold ground, too sick to stare at the blood any longer. Instead he stared up at the clouds in the sky, slowly exploring his body with his good hand. He was still in one piece. Then he felt it. His fingers grasped at it, a hard little spike of stone. It was protruding from his fur, ringed by a dampness he knew was blood. He could not pull it loose. It dawned on him why, as he slid his questing fingers along his chest to his back, where he found the same hard stone beneath him: it went all the way through. He had landed on a pointed stone, and it crushed his ribcage, punctured through his lung, burst all the way through him. It missed his heart, he noted disinterestedly.

He pressed his fingers against his heart, feeling the feeble pulse. He was still alive, but how long could he hold on? He felt cold, his warmth seeping away from him. Edgar, his beloved, what would happen to his mate? Hati pressed his hands over the stone, in a weak attempt to hide it. He couldn't bear to see Edgar cry. Would he even get a chance to say goodbye? His pale eyes watered with tears he could barely feel, a numbness spreading from the hole in his chest. The seasons they had spent together, they were the best times of his life. If this was to be the end, he had no regrets except one... he wouldn't get to taste the cherry pie waiting for him inside.
