Wet tears were streaming down his cheeks, and he did not feel them. He was cold all over, and he was beginning to feel tired, like he should close his eyes and rest. His mind was so sluggish -- there was logic struggling to resurface through the haze, telling him if he slept he would never wake again. But he didn't want to be here, not like this. He always hated the sight and scent of blood, it made him queasy. He wanted to be indoors, and warm, and settling down for a cozy meal with his mate. Dizzily he stared up at the clouds, perplexed when a sudden shadow fell over him. Was someone there, or was it just going dark? There was already darkness creeping into the corners of his vision, so he knew he would not have to be here with the blood for long. It would all go away.

Peace settled over him them. A warm touch caressed his throat, arms wrapping around him in a tender embrace. Hati sighed pleasantly, tilting back his muzzle to peer up at Edgar's face. He was so happy to see his mate, but the dog was crying. Such a pitiful sight, those copper eyes welling with tears. Why was he so sad? Didn't he know that everything would be all right now that they were together again?

He parted his lips, attempting to speak, but a sickly croak was all he could muster. A bubble of blood pressed its way past his jaws, speckling the ghostly-pale fur of his chin as it burst. What was the point in speaking? Edgar would never hear him. He wheezed a laugh, the breath rattling painfully in his windpipe. He would communicate the same way the two had for all the seasons they spent together, in writing. Hati touched his pawpads to the hole in his chest, his seeping lifeblood instantly staining the fingers of his uninjured hand deep crimson. Then he raised his trembling arm over to his lover, painting a small shape in the silky-white fur of Edgar's chest. A heart.

Then his arm fell limp to the ground, cold and numb. Hati's pale blue eyes, once sharp and intelligent, grew clouded and dim, fixated on the last sight they would ever see -- his one and only, the dog that had never once heard his voice but somehow understood him more than any other. His life had been filled with a simple joy, a happiness he had never known before he'd met Edgar. He would not change a thing.
