The room was dark, lit only by the fading orange light of the sunset leaking in through the window. The darkness gave a sense of tranquillity which was furthered by the lack of movement in the house. The pups were asleep, all of the curled up against Neela’s stomach, a thick fur thrown over all 5 of them to provide more heat.
Three of the up-to-now nameless pups seemed healthy, their skin spouting a thin layer of fur; if she looked carefully she could see colours from a soft chocolate brown, to a pure white to even a flash of her own russet among the puppies. Two of the males were showing themselves to be of the Knight bloodline, already large in size compared to the others, though the oldest female – oldest of the litter actually – was far from small.
It was the youngest, and smallest that had Neela worried. Even covered with a reddish down of fur the small, sickly looking pup was shivering and coughing every now and then. Neela had shoved her in the warmest place she could, down her front where her fur was thick and bushy enough to almost swallow the pup.
Taking away the body of the pups twin had almost killed Neela, she couldn’t bear to do it again.
She whined pathetically as the pup woke and started coughing, a pathetic small sound. The other three spelt on peacefully, their bodies healthy and strong but this one, her littlest pup, looked to be on the verge of death. Gently Neela poked her muzzle down, running a rasping tongue over the red pups head before curling her neck up against her.
