Daybreak had reached its peak, making the autumn air hot and unbearable to the arctic female. Sunlight filtered through the forest leaves, heating the shaded forest. Fall had just begun to grip the world, but summer still refused to release its wrought iron grasp. Cicada's called out to each other loudly, drowning out almost all other sounds in their incessant drone. Several birds still chirped merrily in the trees, singing their last songs of the year before making the journey south. Many trees had begun to blossom red and gold as their leaves became brittle and started to change.

Kiara lay still upon the cool moss beneath a large tree, its long branches providing some relief from the heat as she rested. Sapphire eyes stared unseeing at the world behind half-closed lids, and a single ear twitched as a grasshopper landed atop the sensitive appendage. It was as if the world had forgotten the huntress and all the danger she possessed to it. For now, she was an immovable body of soft fur, listless in the heat. Soft pants emerged as her exposed belly moved gently up and down. But other than her breathing, the alabaster female lay completely still.

Despite her lack of motion, Kiara wasn't asleep. How could she be? Her mind worked, reviewing every event that had brought her to the forest. She had abandoned her pack, her only daughter, her best friend, for a creature that was even close to her in species. There were times when even Kiara couldn't believe what she had done, and the insanity that had taken her away from everything she held dear. As an unshifted wolf, and one immune to the luperci virus no less, Kiara had a different standard of living from most canines. She didn't cook her meat or live in a house. To not live with the safety and comfort of a pack was close to being unthinkable. yet, she had dropped everything to follow after the male who had captured her attention and won over her feral heart; Toby. But in recent days, Kiara had begun to wonder if her decision had been wrong. What if she had made a terrible and irreversible mistake?
