Without Inferni, without his family, Gabriel was a man bound only to the Word. He had thought this enough, but time was a cruel thing and with it came the weight of days. Weary in soul as he was in body, he had been ready to turn tail and retreat to the Waste.

Then he had met her.

A part of him knew that she was damned. A part of him would have destroyed her. Yet something kept him moving, learning, listening. Gabriel had come to her side when no others would and been given a task. If there was something proven by his past is was that Gabriel de le Poer was a very patient man.

So they had begun hunting together, feeling out the partnernship, uncertain and unwelcoming. He was older than her, grizzled by war and loss. Gray flecked his muzzle where it had not been before and his eyes carried ghosts. He thought often of his children, and especially of those he did not know—he thought of Anu and Faolin and Alaine with dim and distant longing. Someone new had come into his life and slowly, it was her face he was coming to see. Slowly, he sought to replace them all.

Head low, he trailed the earth as a dog of old, looking very much line one himself. A mass of scar tissue bunched at his shoulder and he slowed, keenly aware of the limp. At his throat, the cross and Saint clattered together. Only his father’s sigil remained still, nestled comfortably in the thick crème fur around his throat.

“Axelle?” He called over his shoulder, certain she would want to see what he was now certain were remains of a campsite.
