As Axelle shooed his hands away, his heart sank just a little more and his head bowed some. It was as if she couldn't stand his touch, like his fingers felt like poison to her. A brief lance of anger flooded through his system at the thought that his own mate didn't want him near and he figured it may have been due to the task she was focusing on - the slaying of her father. Perhaps it was just this thing with Tyko that was causing her to be so distant and dismissive. Perhaps she would become a little more receptive to him when she returned, once it was done. When she returned, not if, he told himself.
Kai watched as Axelle headed over to the bed and joined the slave girl, nodding at her instructions about the horse. He wasn't crazy about the beast but he would do as Axelle asked him. Kai turned to head out, and as he glanced over his shoulder to remind Axelle to be careful and to call if she needed him, he saw she was asleep so he simply headed out.
Couer was as pleased to see Malakai as he was to see the horse. Both glared at each other for a moment, imposing their will on the other, until Kai approached the beast. He tried not to get too close to the horse if he could help it but now, he had a job to do. He gave the animal water and made sure his feed was topped up and as the animal munched on the straw and hay, Kai patted the beast's neck, speaking to him quietly, as if the horse could understand his words. "I know you care for her like I do, so when you're out there with her, keep a watchful eye on that male. If he goes for her, it is your job to help protect her, okay?" The horse made no sign that he had understood his words and instead continued eating.
Kai spent a few hours with the beast, making sure, as Axelle had told him to, that the animal was ready to go when the sun rose. He made sure the saddle was mounted, that the animal had had plenty of water and Kai had made sure to pack a little food and water for Axelle and the slave, just in case, as well as a few medical supplies. Once that was done, Kai led the animal around to the mouth of the caverns and securing the reins to a hitching post nearby, the black male returned inside to Axelle's cave. His own nerves were growing for his mate's safety. Kai knew of Tyko's strength despite his age and ailments, after all he had managed to stab him in the shoulder. A thought occured to him but he quickly shook it away. He wondered if things were the other way around and it was him getting ready for a kill, for a fight to the death, would Axelle be as worried about him as he was about her? Something inside of him doubted it. In fact, he wasn't sure if she would show any concern for his safety at all. It was the upcoming fight, he told himself. Things would be better once she was back.
